Boniface Otukene – Planting the Seeds of Equality

How One Youth Leader in Kitgum Is Cultivating Respect, Opportunity, and Inclusion

As an agroforestry technician and agronomist, Boniface Otukene understands the importance of nurturing growth. Whether caring for crops, supporting young people in his community, or raising his own family, he believes that lasting change requires patience, commitment, and the willingness to invest in the future.

In Kitgum, Boniface Otukene is known as someone who leads with fairness, empathy, and a deep commitment to his community. As Chairperson of a local youth group, he uses his voice to promote gender equality and encourage others to build stronger, more respectful relationships within their families and communities.

For Boniface, gender equality begins at home. He believes that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and reach their full potential, regardless of gender. In his own family and among extended relatives, he has worked to ensure that both boys and girls have access to education and equal support.

"I actively advocate for every child's right to access education, regardless of gender."

The same values shape his family life. Boniface believes that healthy relationships are built on partnership, mutual respect, and shared decision-making. By involving his wife in important family discussions and responsibilities, he strives to model the kind of equality he hopes to see throughout society.

His commitment to these principles is also deeply personal. Growing up, he witnessed his father mistreat his mother—experiences that influenced the kind of husband, father, and community leader he wanted to become. Rather than accepting harmful norms, Boniface chose to challenge them.

"I once spoke with my father about how he was treating my mother, encouraging him to change his behavior and adopt more respectful and peaceful ways of relating at home."

Those experiences reinforced his belief that change often starts within families and through the courage to have difficult conversations.

Within the wider community, Boniface has earned a reputation for fairness, consistency, and a willingness to listen. He is frequently invited to contribute during community meetings and decision-making processes, particularly on matters affecting the wellbeing of local residents. Through respectful dialogue and encouraging communication, he works to ensure that people of all ages and backgrounds feel heard and valued.

He is especially passionate about supporting women and girls to participate fully in society. By encouraging them to pursue education, develop skills, and seek meaningful opportunities before marriage, he hopes to create communities where their contributions are recognized and respected.

As both a community leader and a father, Boniface is motivated by the hope of building a better future for the next generation.

"I hope my daughter grows up to be empowered and treated with dignity by any man she chooses."

Integrity remains central to the way he leads. Through honesty, accountability, and treating others with respect, Boniface strives to be a positive role model for those around him.

Although balancing community engagement with the demands of his profession can sometimes be challenging, he remains committed to advancing gender equality. He also believes that supporting young people’s mental wellbeing is an important part of building stronger and more inclusive communities.

As one of the winners of the National Champions Advancing Inclusion Awards, Boniface Otukene is being recognized for his dedication to creating a society where fairness, respect, and opportunity extend to everyone.

His story reminds us that meaningful change often begins with the choices we make in our own homes, the conversations we are willing to have, and the example we set for others. Through his leadership and advocacy, Boniface is helping to cultivate a future rooted in equality, dignity, and hope.
