William Bob Labeja – Leading Change Through Fairness and Community Service

A Young Clan Leader Promoting Equality, Peace, and Inclusion

At just 23 years old, William Bob Labeja is already making a meaningful difference in his community. A vocational training student at Acholi Presidential Hub School in Gulu District and a clan youth leader, William has become a trusted voice for fairness, inclusion, and peaceful conflict resolution.

While many young people are still discovering their place in society, William has embraced leadership responsibilities that directly impact the lives of those around him. Through his role within the clan structure, he regularly helps address cases of gender-based violence, family disputes, and community conflicts.

“Everyone should be treated fairly and given equal opportunities.”

For William, gender equality is not simply a concept. It is something that should be reflected in everyday actions, relationships, and decisions. He believes that when women, men, girls, and boys are treated equally, communities become stronger and more harmonious.

His commitment to equality is rooted in personal experience. Within his own family, William has taken an active role in supporting relatives through difficult situations and helping to resolve conflicts fairly. He also provides emotional support to his mother, a survivor of violence connected to the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) conflict, helping her feel heard, valued, and empowered.

“Gender equality is important because it promotes fairness, empowers all individuals, and makes life better and more harmonious for everyone.”

As a clan youth leader, William is often called upon to help mediate disputes and resolve cases involving gender-based violence. Family members, elders, and community members trust him to approach sensitive situations with integrity, respect, and confidentiality.

One example involved helping to resolve a domestic violence case within his own family. Experiences like these have strengthened his determination to challenge harmful social norms and promote healthier relationships within the community.

“I work to challenge harmful social norms and promote safety and fairness within my community.”

William believes that meaningful change begins with listening. Whether engaging with women, youth, or elders, he emphasizes respect, empathy, and humility in every conversation. By creating spaces where people feel heard and included, he helps foster trust and understanding across generations.

His efforts also extend to raising awareness about gender-based violence during clan meetings and ensuring that the voices of women and girls are represented in discussions and decision-making processes.

“I ensure that both boys and girls are treated equally, promoting fairness and empowerment within the community.”

Despite his young age, William approaches leadership with a strong sense of responsibility. He believes that integrity means leading by example, treating people fairly, and maintaining confidentiality when handling sensitive matters.

What motivates William most is his desire to build peaceful families and communities. He sees gender equality as an important tool for reducing conflict, strengthening relationships, and creating opportunities for everyone to thrive.

“I aim to reduce conflicts and tensions between men and women and encourage peaceful coexistence in the community.”

As one of the winners of the National Champions Advancing Inclusion Awards, William Bob Labeja is being recognized for his commitment to equality, community leadership, and positive social change. His story demonstrates that leadership is not defined by age, but by a willingness to serve others and stand up for what is right.

We are proud to recognize William as one of our champions and look forward to seeing the continued impact of his work in promoting inclusion, fairness, and opportunity for all.
