Gender Equality Champions: Stories of Change

Celebrating men who are helping build more equal and inclusive communities

Gender equality is not only about creating opportunities for women and girls. It is also about encouraging men and boys to become active participants in building a more equal society.

The Gender Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Champions Award was introduced by Jeremiah Lucas Opira Foundation (JLOF) Sweden in collaboration with its partners within the Creative Partnership Programme: Jeremiah Lucas Opira Foundation Uganda (JLOFU) and Northhood Production Initiative Gulu (NPIG). The initiative grew from a shared commitment to highlighting the role that men and boys can play in advancing gender equality and creating positive change within their communities.

Champions of Change

Through the project, men and boys across Uganda were given an opportunity to share their experiences, perspectives and work towards gender equality, diversity and inclusion.

The Champions come from different backgrounds and hold different roles within their communities. Some are educators, activists and community leaders, while others work in areas such as law, social work, agriculture and business. What connects them is a shared belief that equality benefits everyone.

Their stories show that change can begin in many different ways. It can mean supporting girls’ education, speaking out against gender-based violence, encouraging women to take on leadership roles, sharing responsibilities at home, challenging harmful social norms or creating spaces where everyone feels heard and respected.

From Action to Recognition

The project culminated in the National Champions Advancing Inclusion Awards 2026, where ten outstanding men were recognized for their commitment to gender equality, inclusion, human rights and community empowerment.

The awards provided an opportunity to celebrate the Champions and shine a light on the work they are doing in their families and communities. Recognition was at the heart of the celebration, but the impact of their work reaches far beyond the award itself.

Meet the Champions

Behind every recognition is a story of personal experiences, choices and actions. Together, the stories of the Champions demonstrate how men and boys can challenge expectations, inspire others and contribute to communities where everyone has the opportunity to participate, contribute and thrive.
